Summer Tours of Montgomery Cemetery

June 7, 28, July 19, August 16 & September 20

Join staff and volunteers on selected Sunday afternoons from June through September as they lead tours of this most interesting historic cemetery. Each Sunday tour will focus on various themes regarding the fascinating residents and the Cemetery’s unique history. Visiting the grounds of Montgomery Cemetery involves walking on uneven terrain, in non-shaded areas and in grassy fields. Guests should come prepared for these conditions and exercise caution if wandering off the designated pathways. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to eat on the lawn after the tour. Admission is free. Tours will not occur in inclement weather. Each tour takes approximately an hour and 15 minutes. Admission is free of charge.

By the Light of the Moon

Come experience the peacefulness and beauty of Montgomery Cemetery by the light of a full moon as we walk, relax and tell stories of the past. Arrive at sunset - 8:30 p.m. Bring a flashlight.
Over There: Montgomery County's Boys in the First World War
June 28, 2009
Come learn of the sacrifices of soldiers from Montgomery County who served on the Western Front during the First World War. This tour will start at 3 p.m. Come early or stay late and view the short term exhibit at the Gatehouse featuring items from the Society's collection of artifacts from the war.
They Rush In: Firefighters of the Past
July 19, 2009
We will highlight the community members that have protected our lives and property through the generations. Additionally, Montgomery Hose, one of Norristown's Fire Companies, will demonstrate proper use of fire extinguishers. Tour begins at 3pm from Gatehouse; demonstration afterwards.
The Darkest Day: the Exeter Train Wreck, 1889

Come learn of the "Most Appalling Tragedy" that befell some of Montgomery county's finest on that fateful day. Many people who had known, served under, or worked for Governor and Major General John F. Hartranft took a special train from Norristown to Harrisburg to see the dedication of a new monument to Hartranft. However, the train got caught up in some signal problems and echoes of the tragedy can still be felt today. Tour begins from Gatehouse at 3pm.
Healing Hands: the Doctors of Montgomery Cemetery

Come learn about the doctors that have made Norristown a center of medicine for almost two hundred years. Tour begins from Gatehouse at 3pm.
